Nolo's Lawyer Directory Terms & Conditions
Prioritization - Search Results Listing Order
With the exception of premium positioning (see below), consumers who search the Directory will see your listing within the search results in rotating order within your county and legal category. When consumers search by zip code, advertisers with office addresses in that zip code's city will appear as a rotating group below the county's premium advertisers, but above that county's other regular advertisers.
The first through sixth positions in each search result can be reserved for an additional fee ("Premium Positioning"). Premium Positioning is split into two groups ("First Tier" and "Second Tier"). First Tier represents the top 3 positions within a set of search results, while Second Tier represents positions 4 through 6. The order in which premium advertisers appear will rotate among other premium advertisers within the same tier of search results.
Product Standards
New advertisers must confirm contact information and a list of legal practice areas upon application to the Lawyer Directory. These ads (“Abridged Profiles”) will be published on the site within one week of application.
Within 30 days from the date of Directory membership, advertisers must complete the full Profile template. Only complete, well-crafted Profiles, with photos or logos (for firm profiles), will be published. Those not meeting our high standards will be returned for editing.
Term Options
Options include month-to-month terms with no minimum number of months or other obligations, or annual terms of one or two years. Your term starts begins once you have been accepted into the Directory, in the week following the date you join the Directory.
Application Fee
A non-refundable fee is due with the application ($100 for individual attorneys, and $250 for firms). This one-time fee covers costs for the qualification process including bar record checks, Profile evaluation, and system programming. If Nolo does not accept your application, we will promptly refund the Application Fee in full.
Advertising Fee
The fee to advertise is based on the geographic market area, legal categories, and available upgrades you request, less applicable discounts. See "Lawyer Directory Membership Pricing." For month-to-month term advertisers, prices are subject to change at any time and any increases or decreases will begin one month after notification.
Discounts
Additional Geographical Area: Counties, sub-counties, or broader upgrade areas. 10% off each ad for two or more areas.
Additional Categories: For advertisers with multiple primary practice focuses who meet qualification standards in each. 10% off each ad for two or more categories.
Additional Attorneys: From the same law firm and working from the same office location. Each attorney must qualify and be accepted individually and will have a separate Profile in the most appropriate legal category. 10% off each ad for two or more attorney listings.
Annual Term Agreements: One-year term advertisers receive 25% off the listed monthly rate with advance payment, or 15% off with monthly payment. Two-year term advertisers receive 50% off the listed monthly rate with advance payment, or 30% off with monthly payment. Advertisers with annual terms will not be affected by pricing changes within the term of their contract.
Acceptance
The following terms must be met to be accepted into the Directory:
- Recommendation by Regional Manager: During the interview, your specific legal experience and expertise will be discussed. Regional Managers are instructed to match attorneys to available openings in a manner to ensure good coverage of sub-categories, experience, and fee level. Also important is the Regional Manager's overall impression regarding professionalism and customer service.
- Application: You must provide all requested information to create the Abridged Profile, and complete biographical information as indicated in the complete Profile. Also required is a high-quality digital photograph or logo graphic (for firm profiles).
- Licensing Check: Nolo checks for a valid license in each practice state and verification of good standing in state bar associations. Any past disbarments and suspensions (with possible exceptions for technical violations or nonpayment of dues) will disqualify an applicant.
- Declaration: Your advertising contract with Nolo will include a statement from you regarding any past disbarment or suspension by any bar association in any jurisdiction at any time in the past.
- Future Actions Notification: You agree to notify Nolo within three business days if you are the subject of any disciplinary action taken by any bar association.
- References to Nolo: You agree not to represent your advertisement in the Lawyer Directory as an endorsement, referral, or recommendation by Nolo.
- Nolo Pledge: By applying, you (and each attorney in your firm) agree to the following pledge to clients, which reflects our service standards:
- You will respect clients' efforts to educate themselves.
- You will use your professional skills to meet clients' objectives.
- You will provide clients with a clear, fair, written agreement that spells out how you will handle their legal matter, and will provide an estimate of the time and cost involved whenever possible.
- You will perform legal work to the best of your ability, regardless of the size or complexity of the legal matter.
- You will communicate regularly with clients.
- You will be loyal to clients and inform them of any possible conflicts of interest.
- You will give clients honest and complete advice and information.
- You will give clients clear, detailed and timely bills.
Payment
All fees will be charged to a prearranged accepted credit or debit card in the week following your application and monthly thereafter. Annual term contracts are available at lower rates with monthly or advance payment options. You will not be billed before your Abridged Profile is published live on the website. Invoices and other payment methods are not available.
Termination
Nolo reserves the right to terminate your advertisement at any time by providing you with notice and a prorated refund. This could occur if:
- You are disciplined by the state attorney-licensing agency (bar association)
- Nolo receives significant complaints from customers. The determination of whether complaints are significant is within Nolo's sole discretion.
- You fail to submit your full Profile information and provide a high-resolution photograph.
